But making those slots can be really putzy. Did you know you can get a router bit to cut those slots? Two, in fact: one to make a slot with a countersink for a ftathead screw, another for a counterbored slot for a roundhead screw. Both are porportioned for #8 screws. Use the bit in a plunge router (or in a table-mounted router) to cut a slot. This t-slot Router bit cuts slots for standard 1/4 in. Bolts that have a 7/16 in. H heads with up to 1/4 in. The shank is 1/4 in. T-slot router bits are great for creating T-channels for jig and clamp applications and keyholes for hanging projects.

I cut a groove before using this bit to form the kerf of the T-slot. Worked smoothly, for me, in hard maple.
