You don’t need us to tell you how unusual a year 2020 was.
But it was. And it led to some incredible moments both on and off the golf course.
In fact, even before the COVID-19 pandemic put the world on hold – shutting down golf for 13 weeks starting in March at The Players Championship – the year got off to a hot start with a hot-mic situation at January’s Sentry Tournament of Champions.
From “pampered f—s” and Mai-tais in Hawaii to gobshite and “bitch-slapped into reality,” we took a look at some of the golf world’s most memorable quotes of the year. Did we miss any of your favorites?
Golf’s best quotes of 2020
'Pampered f---s' and Mai-tais
Thank you, Patrick Cantlay, for setting the tone for a wild year of quotes in the game of golf. We raise our Mai-tai in your honor.
As an early honorable mention, we’ve got to give a shoutout to Xander Schauffele for candidly stating post-round, “I should’ve won the tournament.”
Brooks: 4, Bryson: 1
“I don’t think his genetics even make him look good,” DeChambeau said of Brooks Koepka in January on his Twitch stream. “Did you see the Body Issue? He didn’t have any abs. I have abs.”
Brooks, your response?
This might be the greatest comeback in golf. That or any one of these Max Homa roasts.
Remember when Brandel Chamblee said 'bitch-slapped into reality'?
There’s no real need to tease or explain this one. In a Q&A with Golfweek in March, Brandel Chamblee said golf instruction has been “bitch-slapped into reality.” Then he tried to walk it back, but the damage had been done.

Bubba Watson opens up on struggles with anxiety
“I’ve sought help in many different ways, many different forms, trying to overcome it,” Bubba Watson told Golfweek in an October interview about his struggles with anxiety. “It really comes down to me being nuts. I’m trying to make light of it because using humor helps. But it’s all in my head. It’s all anxiety.
“I thought I was going to die.”

Tyrrell Hatton 'cuddling the toilet' at 5 a.m.
Not enough people give Tyrrell Hatton the credit he deserves.
From (perfectly?) tossing clubs in complete disgust in October to shooting at and flipping off a pond at Bay Hill in March, the 29-year-old Englishman entertained us all year long. In fact, he went on to win at Bay Hill, leading to a victory celebration that quickly went down the toilet.
Rory McIlroy shoots down Premier Golf League
Remember the Premier Golf League? Yeah, that whole kerfuffle was this year.
Rory McIlroy dealt the proposed new professional golf circuit a huge blow with four words: “For me, I’m out.”

Amy Olson's performance - and words - to remember
On the eve of the final round of the U.S. Women’s Open, Amy Olson learned of the passing of her father-in-law. A grief-stricken Olson went on to pull off a gutsy performance, finishing T-2. But how did she do it?
“I allowed myself to think about what I’m grateful for, and I’ve got a long list.”
When our columnist used 'gobshite' in his lede
Eamon Lynch – I’d say my colleague but I’d hate to offend him – has a certain way with words that few can rival. This opening line from a July column on Bryson DeChambeau deserves a shoutout.
It’s one of life’s more reliable axioms that if a man has to tell you he’s a good dude, there’s a fair chance he is actually an insufferable gobshite.

'This is your time'
Imagine getting to pass the torch for a really exclusive role to your best friend. For Solheim Cup captains Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst, that’s a reality.

A 'turd' and 'true piece of trash'
Another one we really don’t need to tease. A professional golfer called Vijay Singh a “turd” and “true piece of trash” for entering a Korn Ferry Tour event in May. We’d embed the Tweets but they were deleted (bummer). You can still read them here, though.
'I want her to see me be a strong woman'
Let’s end with some positivity, shall we?

Michelle Wie West had a daughter this year, and that’s pushing her more than her golf career ever could.
“I really want her to see me play,” said Wie, “and I want her to see me be a strong woman.”
Wie West gave birth to Makenna Kamalei Yoona West in June, and 10 days later she was back on the range at Stanford hitting balls.

Orson Welles:
For my next experiment ladies and gentleman, I would appreciate the loan of any small personal object form your pocket. A key, box of matches, a coin - ah, key it is, good sir. Hold it up 10 feet over your head and watch out for the slightest hint of hanky panky... and behold before our very eyes a transformation! We've changed your key into... a coin. What happened to the key? It's been returned to you. Look closely, sir, you'll find the key back in your pocket. May we see it please? What's that, sir? Did I used to be a magician, sir? I'm still working on it. As for the key, it was not symbolic of anything... this isn't that kind of movie. You'll find the coin in your pocket now, sir. Keep your eyes on that coin sir, while it's returned to you... as your key. Should we return you to your mother? Is this your mother? No, of course not. Open your mouth wide... and we'll return you your money. And by the way, have you ever heard of Robert Houdin, speaking of magicians, I mean. Oh no, of course not. But of course, you do know my partner Francois Reichenbach. Houdin was the greatest magician who ever lived. And do you know what he said? 'A magician, he said, is just an actor-Just an actor playing the part of a magician.'
